Vote.org Condemns Supreme Court’s Decision to Dismantle Voting Rights Act

Published on April 29, 2026

Vote.org CEO Andrea Hailey issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s  ruling today in Louisiana v Callais:

“The Supreme Court has spent years chipping away at the Voting Rights Act – the crown jewel of the civil rights movement and the cornerstone of protecting the voting rights of minority voters. Today’s opinion makes that landmark law nearly impossible to enforce – creating a standard so impossibly high that it can never be met.

“With today’s decision, the court’s conservative majority just handed Republican state legislatures a license to erase Black political power across the South. Millions of Black and Brown voters now have fewer legal protections against maps deliberately drawn to silence their voices. More than a dozen majority-minority congressional seats are now at risk of being wiped off the map.

“When the Supreme Court abandons its responsibility to protect the voting rights of minority voters, organizations like ours must step up. In the wake of today’s decision, Vote.org will be accelerating our voter registration and education efforts throughout the South. We will not accept a democracy where the rules are rewritten to dilute the votes of Black Americans and other communities of color.”
