Vote.org Statement on Watson v. Republican National Committee

Published on March 23, 2026

Today, the Supreme Court will hear arguments in Watson v. Republican National Committee, a case with significant implications for mail voting in more than a dozen states. The case centers on a Mississippi law that allows mail-in ballots postmarked on or before Election Day to be counted if they are received within five business days after Election Day.

Vote.org CEO Andrea Hailey issued the following statement:

"At Vote.org, our mission is simple: protect access to the ballot box. Everything we do is focused on making voting more accessible and ensuring that eligible voters can successfully cast a ballot. That is our north star. Today, that mission is before the Supreme Court.

"Grace periods for mail ballots ensure that voters who cast their ballot by Election Day have their votes counted. Without them, hundreds of thousands of eligible voters who timely cast their ballot — including servicemembers stationed abroad, voters with disabilities who rely on mail voting, and voters in rural or remote areas — risk losing their vote.

"More participation strengthens our democracy. The Supreme Court should uphold Mississippi's law and protect the right of every voter who casts their ballot on time to have it counted."
