Vote.org Applauds Supreme Court’s Decision to Uphold State Law Allowing Grace Periods for Mail Ballots
Vote.org CEO Andrea Hailey issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s ruling today in Watson v. Republican National Committee. The decision upheld a Mississippi law that allows mail ballots arriving after Election Day to be counted, as long as they are postmarked by Election Day.
“With today’s decision, the Supreme Court stood with the American electorate, particularly the one-third of voters who cast their ballots by mail. It is a victory for voting rights and the commonsense principle that a ballot postmarked by Election Day should be counted.
“Mail-in voting is used by tens of millions of Americans across parties, and in all corners of the country. It is also a cornerstone of voting accessibility for Americans with disabilities, Americans who work all day on Election Day, and Americans who are serving our country at military bases and diplomatic posts abroad.
“When Americans send their ballot by mail, they deserve to trust that it will be counted and their voice will be heard. Today’s decision affirms that trust, and it protects those whose ballots are delayed by weather, USPS staffing shortages, and other acts beyond their control.
“Despite today’s victory, the work is far from over, as the right to vote faces increasing attacks across the country. That’s why Vote.org will continue to fight for reliable, secure, and accessible voting for all eligible Americans."
